How did YOU learn to PvP in Arenas?
As for me, i learned it the Hard way:
No teachers, no guildmates, no wiki.guildwars (back in the day i didnt jnow it existed), no real-life help mates...
Only being called eecher, troll, gay, noob, reported, dishonored..
Maculated by all RA and TA
rejected.
I saw how other players were leaving in the middle of RA announcin in chat "omfg!! this team is full of noobs!" leaving me alone.
Being bullied at. But i grew strong
I learned how to get along and now im back at TAs ownin.
I had a mantra "I WILL SURVIVED" allways.. i mean, some players are plain mean.
For example: as a monk i thought a +4 health regen MENDING was the best skill in the game.. when i cast it bfore the match, 2 of the players used to leave.. It was embarassing, no-one told me that the exchange of health for energy was not efficient with MENDIN they just called: ALEJANDRO IS USING MENDIN.. and then being called "NOOB!"
in PVP: have u ever helped a noobie? or teached someone? Have u offended noobies? bully and wreak havoc with witty insults?
I remember my time as newbie and i dont.. But i dont help them either; i jast say "change ur build"

Learned the hard way aswell... Being called noob, fag, all kinds of shit. But that was only in TA and RA though. Had my pro leader teach me how to AB
And now I pwn
I don't noob ppl and such. Some do that to me, I'll just say; Well, come here and we'll take it 1v1. Usually I win but sometimes I lose, but I don't really care about that anyway...
Edit: Don't really say the above much now... Since I run cripslash right now and... Well, that aint the best 1v1 =/

Pro AB, that made me LOL
Anyway.....
I learned a comon build, spammed that in all chat untill I got picked up. Saved up faction and unlocked all the skills I could while capping the Elites to dave the faction for other skills. Always kept a stash of 3K Balt Faction incase I needed skills I didn't yet have unlocked.
I created several slots for PvP only Chracters (Currently 12 slots with only 3 PvE, 2 of wich are Mules) so I could swap quickly, sometimes people get impatient a just grab another and go. Use of "J" is better than saying, "I don't have that rune/weapon mod/weapon"
I got Ventrilo, already had TS, but its just not as popular.
I STFU and listened to those incharge.
I paid attention to other peoples builds and unlocked popular skills first.
And thats how I got where I am today.
I do not help new people much no, I prefer winning. IF I group with a rookie guildie or some such I tell them to roll a PvP only or I'm not helping, and go from there, but I don't help strangers, my Mom always told me not to talk to them.

I went into RA and paid attention to what killed me. I developed counter builds. I paid attention to what beat my team and developed builds to help my team as a whole. I paid attention to other's builds and adapted mine to include elements of theirs I considered good. The common element is that I paid attention, kept an open mind, and didnt get discouraged.
Oh and no wiki or assistance/instruction here either.

There's not much chance to teach someone else in RA, or to be taught other than what you can learn from observation. Not much time to tell team mates to "change ur build" either, nor much reason to do that. Its random for a reason, there's little time before the match starts, its a little too busy for a bunch of startegizing once it does, and if you lose its adios to your team mates anyway. AB is just a little more organized, but really if you want more experienced pvp'rs to help you learn pvp you need to hook up with the right guild. Of course, learning the "hard" way through trial and error is not so bad either, and can be fun if you have the right attitude.

No offense, but thats probably the last thing you want to say when someone calls you a noob.
Anyway, I learned a lot from AB, especially positionning and battlefield awareness. I did some RA as well, but I would consider AB to be a superior "Training ground". I also read as much as I could about PvP until it became a mindset rather than just knowledge.
I still have stuff to learn, but I think I have progressed a lot, especially when I remember how bad I was just a few months back.
I tend to rage at people a lot, but mostly when they are bad to the point that stupidity seems to be the only possible explanation.

Trial and error. Get to know some people, play with them. More trial and error.

i learned from AB, i basicly started with a touch ranger and once i figured out what to do in AB i started running other builds and then just adapted them and made them better and more efficiant.
when i first monked in AB i thought vigorus spirit was the freaking sweetest spell.. then i was told otherwise.. by alot of people.. and so i started to dabble in protection rather than straight up healing.

I don't remember.. uhhh let's see.
I didn't PvP at all in the first 2 months. I PvE'd with 5 characters (ranger, monk, warrior, ele, necro) to unlock/get to know as many skills as I could. I think I played arenas for a couple rounds with the mending W/Mo template; I had no clue what to do, everything happened too fast. I picked up monking and decided to give tombs a shot with a bar a saw in a video from [Rift]. The first day I tried it some guild recruited me and that got me into GvG. From that moment I played GvG and only GvG, I always got better than my teammates so the only direction I could move was up. Good ol' times.
For anyone who wonders here's my guild history:
Rabid Dogs From Hell [Grr] (they picked me up in tombs, Boris<3)
F B Is Most Unwanted [FBI]
Way of Perfection [wP] (Guild I tried to form with the remains of FBI, too much inactivity, it didn't work out, I joined [DPS] for a bit after that]
Frenzied Flamingos [FFs]
Team Flamingo [FFs]
Delta Formation [DF]
Aye.

I learned it the hard way too...i first played AB i guess...then mostly RA until i got out of newbism<reading wiki and watching games on observe helped a lot>. Now i hels RA newbs if they show potential(have a quite good bar but don't use it properly/they use the skillbar quite good but it needs mods<i'm a monk so i see most of their skills>), but if they not i call them noobs and meh... It's quite annoying to bust your ass pumping their health up and then see them rush into spirits or getting ganked.

I learned by watching high-ranked GvG's, reading posts by people who have experience, played a lot of AB (where I learned important things such as kiting). Then I moved on to RA and TA and did occasional scrimmages/GvG with my guild where I learned the importance of spikes first hand. Pretty much I have continuously improved and am still improving a lot every day.

When I first got the game I played my way through the arenas unlocking them until I got the HA then got quite a lot of experience there. I didn't really have trouble doing PvP, its all really simple and makes sense to me - just run in and kill everyone thats trying to kill you . PvP in a nutshell. I quit PvP and went to PvE for about a year after giving up on HA.
I had not the faintest idea what AB was until I joined my 5th guild (about a year into the game) and they introduced me into the world of AB (by far my favourite past time in GW) which was still not any trouble, people there were nice enough to explain to me how to point system worked and not call me noob. The capture shrines objective was clear in the very first match I played and I've never had trouble finding a group in AB.
I know what it feels like to not know what the hell is going on so I always help new people as much as I can
So...That's my PvP history

Lied my way into an HA guild full of R8/R9/R10 players. (stated I was low R8)
Oddly enough, they never bothered to ask for a display of my rank.
Towards the end of my membership, when the leader asked for a Tiger-spike, I had been playing with them with them for long enough that I had just gotten the necessary emote.
Of course, I had to play roughly at their level to for them to keep believing me. I was a bit shabby at first, but I picked up the important bits up fairly quick, as they were very willing to help everyone on the team, and I became more finessed in time.
Also, watching obs mode when I was bored for hours. It's like television.

I PVE'ed for the first month I had the game. Joined a PVE guild, and did HoH with them randomly a couple of times. Eventually I became an officer and started recruiting people who were interested in pvp. We were strictly an HoH/TA guild until the inevitable drama started when pve'rs began to worry that PVPers were taking over the guild and the guild disintegrated.
I then joined (serp) where I learned to GVG properly. Serp was a great guild and its surprising how many people in serp or friends with serp went on to become top players. I think that was the golden age of guild wars for me, we had modest success and I made the friends/contacts who would go on to be my current play group all of whom are now much better than me so I end up in guilds and pugs that I absolutely don't have the skill to deserve to be in.
